Keep what is suitable
Existing black railings were retained on this project. Reuse decisions depend on the condition and suitability of each component, not appearance alone. A surface upgrade should not hide problems in the structure below.

Project story / Orange, Virginia
From repeated painted-board repairs to a composite surface, with the existing black railing system retained. This Orange homeowner wanted to move beyond repainting the deck and replacing failed wood boards year after year.
See the project photographsThe starting point
The homeowner reported replacing failed pressure-treated boards on a yearly basis. Another round of paint would not deliver the lower-maintenance surface they wanted. The project focused on the worn walking surface while retaining the existing deck layout and black railing system, rather than assuming every component had to be replaced.
The work
Battlefield Services removed the painted pressure-treated decking and installed Trex Select Pebble Grey across the deck and stairs. The new boards were fitted around retained railing posts and doorway transitions. The project photographs show the old and new surfaces during installation, followed by the completed composite surface and stair details. These are construction and completion photographs, not a claim that the entire structure was replaced.
What this project demonstrates
Existing black railings were retained on this project. Reuse decisions depend on the condition and suitability of each component, not appearance alone. A surface upgrade should not hide problems in the structure below.
New decking does not correct deteriorated framing or inadequate connections. An evaluation should address accessible joists, beams, posts, connections, and stair structure. Removing old boards may reveal additional repairs that need a revised scope before they are covered.
Doorways, borders, stair treads, and retained railing posts all affect the installation. The photographs show how the Pebble Grey surface meets these existing details instead of treating the work as a simple board-for-board color change.

Before you decide
That depends on its condition. The supporting structure, connections, stairs, and railing system need review before reuse can be recommended. Some decks need selective repairs; others need a more extensive rebuild. Photos can start the conversation, but they do not replace a site evaluation.
No. Composite provides a lower-maintenance surface, but routine cleaning and inspection still matter. Follow the care instructions for the selected product, and continue maintaining any retained wood structure and railing components.
Ask about removal and disposal of old boards, the selected decking product, fastening and perimeter details, stair work, railing reuse or replacement, and any structural repairs. Hidden conditions, site access, and optional upgrades can affect the final scope.
Your next project
Share the property location, photos of the surface and supporting structure, and the problems you want to solve. Battlefield Services can discuss whether resurfacing or rebuilding is the right next step.
Include photos of the current deck and accessible framing if you are considering resurfacing. For a new build, describe the size, height, stair access, and how you want to use the space.
